Report No 17 - Fire Pumps — Hathaway Mark 2
Two files containing about 65 Head Quarters Mechanical Development Committee Reports from 1950 to 1958 were saved from destruction by Jim Christie former Forestry Commission HQ, Plant Engineer. Report No 17 compares the output and performance of the Mark 1 and the improved Mark 2 Hathaway pumps and noting the design differences and reduced weight in the latter. Surprisingly there are no handwritten comments on these particular files.
An obvious improvement and so much so that this format was to exist as the Forestry Commission’s main fire pump for the next 50 years! In actual fact they were not that frequently used against fires other than in testing and demonstrations. Fires had a habit of moving too fast and being far from suitable water supplies. They were used somewhat more in later years in filling dams for helicopter fire fighting and also on muskeg foam units.
The pumps were most frequently used for washing machines and tractors ready for inspection, repair or following a bogging! Can anyone remember other uses for the fire pumps?
