Research planting plots at Lael Forest – Planted 1931-1935
This map image was part of a collection passed to Forestry Memories from a storage shed in Newton Nursery used by Forest Research.
A very complex multi species and multi provenance plot layout located near the main road in Lael Forest. The species appears to include European origin larch, pine, Norway spruce, red spruce, white spruce, Lawson’s cypress, Douglas fir, oak, ash plus others.
The seed collection numbers are generally quoted and can be located in the seed identification book (Research Branch Paper No 29) should a copy be available. Also on this website as No 5295. Note that only some of the numbers are recorded in the book as the many small collections for this experiment may have been numbered separately by Research Branch. Does anyone know?
The colours on the map are from ink applied as a wash at the back of the linen paper. The red colour still persists strongly but the yellow and green have faded to a faint outline. The box key at the bottom indicates that the red represents the bracken areas, the green as molinia grass areas, the yellow as other agrostis grass types and no colour as juncus species areas.
The location of the sawmill has been added in by hand.
