Herbi boom sprayer in action on heather checked Sitka spruce
The image is from a photograph collection that was originally stored at Kincardine Forest District office at Durris and may have been taken by Sandy Sandilands. The actual year and location in unknown.
The sprayer and boom have been mounted on an older 4x4 Ford tractor capable of traversing along the ploughed ground. The registration number of the Forestry Commission tractor is KYU782P. The Herbi sprayers are directly mounted on drop arms which swing backwards if they come against any trees.
The PDF has views of the tractor in different positions and angles on the rough ground. There is one fuzzy view where the driver is visible. Also visible are some views of the surrounding glens. There is a similarity to some locations in Craigallachie area or even in the Fetteresso Forest area or further south.
Can anyone identify the driver?

Abbie Gordon (Banchory) provides the following information:
‘Sandy (Sandilands) in his work study days supervised trials, treating heather using the herbicide sprayer mounted on a County 4x4 tractor. The area treated was at Kininvie, (part of Craigallachie FD) an area some distance northeast of Dufftown. I’m not sure of the exact year but about 1980 as a guess. Jimmy Coutts was the tractor driver.’
