South Laggan Forest -Experiment at 1800ft

Date Added: 04 February 2017 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1926 Picture No: 3515

Early photograph taken in 1926 from a forestry album of 117 photographs compiled by an unknown Forestry Commission officer.

Caption reads ‘Norway spruce planted in May 1922 and untouched – Experiment 1 at 1800ft elevation’

Obvious attempt to see what the limits of tree growth were on grass land at high elevations. In this case the Norway spruce is the species whereas the PDF shows Sitka spruce in another similar adjacent plot. Note the use of newspaper sheets to enable the small trees to be seen more clearly in the photograph.
