Roseisle Forest Aerial Photographs

Date Added: 12 December 2014 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1984 Picture No: 2758

Photograph courtesy of Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District with particular help from Lesley Hutcheson who collected a series of general photographs found in the Newton Office and filed them.

This series of photographs may have been taken by the Forestry Commission aircraft fitted out for aerial surveys of forests. The follow on shots in the PDF show very oblique views of most of the forest from the seaward side with details of the wartime shelters or gun emplacements and beach defences. The views extend as far as Burghead and Hopeman with the BBC radio masts sited behind.

The forest planted in the 1930s has some clear felled areas in the middle and this shows up well in overhead and oblique images.

In the photograph bottom right above '10 August' writing is a gouged mark in the forest where a Kinloss Nimrod came down.

On 17 November 1980, following bird strike at Roseisle Forest, near Kinloss, Scotland an RAF Nimrod. XV 256 crashed on take off. The aircraft suffered a major bird-strike immediately after take off and crashed into a wooded area to the east of RAF Kinloss air base. Sadly, both pilots were killed but, due to their skill in controlling the crash, the remainder of the crew escaped.

Does anyone know of a memorial to the 2 pilots who were sadly killed in the Nimrod crash mentioned above? They were Flt Lt Noel Anthony DFC RAAF and Fg Off Stephen Belcher RAF. Comment left on 13 November 2019 at 16:53 by Colin Pomeroy
