Flat Bottomed Sledge for Extraction on Peat
Two files containing about 65 Head Quarters Mechanical Development Committee Reports from 1950 to 1958 were saved from destruction by Jim Christie former Forestry Commission HQ, Plant Engineer. Report No 74 returns again to use of sledges for extraction of timber in areas with peaty soils. Report No 46 covered the used of the tub sledge which required heavy pulls to drag it loaded through the soft peat. This sledge version used the same front curve radius and the tub sledge but extended the bottom to run out on flat plate to give more load bearing capacity. In the event the design did reduce drag a bit and improved output by 15%.
