The canvas covers are spread below some of the best trees to make it easier to gather the seed after it drops from the canopy. Large quantities of leaves and other debris also fall and the seed has to be sorted out by hand and riddles. The same applies where seed is gathered or swept up from the ground not covered by canvas covers.
The attached PDF shows some of the process and after much effort a little of the beech seed at the riddle.
