18 Ton log for James Jones mill

Log 36 feet long and 18 Tons (Oak?) being transported on a large pole wagon. Jim says ‘My brother Bill was one of the wood cutters and it is seen here at Melville Lodges, Ladybank. The tractor could drag the 40 ton load on road at 35mph.
The log was heading for James Jones mill at Larbert’

Looking at this picture, the lorry towing the trailer would have almost certainly been LUA 895. It was based at the Kirriemuir James Jones Sawmill, and was later owned by the late Willie Smith (who was sawmill boss for many years). LUA 895 has since gone into preservation, but can still be seen at vintage rallies around the country.(google reg plate for photos)

It is impossible to tell if the photo is LUA 895 or not.

Legend has it that LUA 895, an ex War department Foden was adapted using parts from an earlier Foden timber tractor.

The photo shows a Foden winch at the back identical to that fitted to LUA 895, the trailer on the other hand is not the one I remember being pulled, that was a professionally made 3 axle pole wagon probably a “Taskers” .
