Newton Nursery 1936
Images courtesy of Alan Duncan, Nursery Manager, Newton Nursery from a small collection of around 20 6x4 inch glass negatives that are stored at the nursery office and date from 1936. The land for the nursery was purchased by the forestry Commission in 1931 and the nursery formed very shortly after.
Looking northwards from the eastern section of the nursery over long board transplant beds of larch. Further down are seed beds some of which some are covered with lath shading and in a transplant bed next to the boundary where six workers can be seen bent down hand weeding.
The farm house and steading is now easily seen and also yard filled with corn and possibly hay stacks. There are some horses in the field next to the yard. Behind the steading are the three blocks of cottages featured in earlier photographs. Behind the cottages are sizeable gardens fenced off with deer height fencing and containing a number of sheds
