Glentress Forestry School, 1946-48 Class

Photograph is part of Bill Stoddart’s collection of images taken when he was a lecturer at several Forester Training Schools. The photographs were handed in by his daughter Lilian Allan at the Forestry Memories drop in day at Huntly on 11 June 2010.

Possibly taken around 1948 or 1949 and taken at same time as Picture No 696 of the 1947-49 class because the Instructors are in same dress and order in both photographs and landscape behind is identical.

If this was taken in 1949 this would be the juniors of the 1948-50 class but no one is recognised so far.

If it was taken in 1948 and could be the 1946-48 students in their final year but according to Tom Johnstone and his personal recollections in Henry Smith’s booklet there were only 21 students that year. The photograph shows 28 students.

If any faces are recognised please let us know the names and possible year.

Number 22 is my dad Hamish Park. He retired in 1984 as Chief Forester, Tummel Forest. Picture taken either 1947 or 1948. Comment left on 26 July 2011 at 22:05 by Joan Park
This picture appears to be in front field at Glentress which was used for sports. Also to the rear of the foresters are the gardens which the workers could grow their food, note the large POW type fence to the left of group, also to the back of number 5 is the small Ammunition shed which stored munitions for blasting rocks for road building etc. At the top corner is the last remaining shed which we called the Conservatory Store used for all items from various forests in South Scotland, it has been changed over the years meeting room saw store etc. Comment left on 27 March 2018 at 21:01 by J R Deacon
Hi Ross. Great to get this information. Can you say how long the camp was used for POW and what were their nationalities? I have also heard that the camp was used for Displaced Persons but that may not be correct. Comment left on 28 March 2018 at 08:17 by Norman
