Thatching costs in Culbin Forest and historical account of the planting of the forest
This was part of an archived file recovered from old shed store at Newton by Malcolm Hobson and Ruaridh Maxwell of Forestry and Land Scotland.
The first page of the PDF (linked below) itemises the costs of thatching 264 acres of sand dunes in Culbin Forest in 1950. The second and third pages are a letter written by T H Woolridge, Divisional Officer, East Scotland Conservancy, replying to a query by LT Col D G H de la Farque of Killiecrankie on the historical planting methods used to establish a forest on the sand in Culbin Forest. He mentions a notch type planting method, use of marram grass in the very early days (from 1922 by FC), the use of several species of trees and an account of planting By Robert Grant of Kincorth in 1874 in the area recorded in the transactions of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland , July 1847 to March 1849. Mr Woolridge further states that thatching with branches and planting through the brash was the continuing method from 1946 of forest establishment on moving sand.
