Monesus uniflora in Culbin Forest

This low growing orchid type plant is usually found in shady pines woods in bare damp patches that have limited competing vegetation. A remnant from the ancient pine forests of another era, it exists in some plantation pine forests currently but under severe threat and is a red list species that is vulnerable to disturbance and changes in management.
Recent studies by Jenifer Baker have shown that it relies on a number of established specific mycorrhizal fungi within the ground to survive and propagate.
