History of Culbin Forest - John Grigor 1868
This document is courtesy of the Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District. At some point an extract relating to Culbin from John Grigor’s book Arboriculture published in 1868 has been typed up and filed with the other histories of Culbin. There is no information on who typed the article but the full details of the book and its contents can be found in Google Books if searched under John Grigor who it seems was an innovative and far seeing nurseryman and forester of his time.
This extract describes in some detail the early history of Culbin, its inundation with sand in 1694 and the subsequent afforestation projects that took place from the 1840s onwards to 1865. It is a remarkable description of early tree planting processes and the successes the owners and also John Grigor achieved by 1865. By then about 400 acres had been planted and from this time on, planting seems to have continued with the eventual establishment of the Low Wood amounting to somewhat over 1500 acres which was in turn felled around 1918. This work laid the foundations for the future work by the Forestry Commission in planting the whole of Culbin Forest.
