Ermine moth in Glen Tanar
The images are from photographic slides courtesy of Abbie Gordon, Banchory who at the time was a Forestry Commission staff member of Grampian Conservancy.
The photograph shows the ghostly web covered defoliated trees along the road side. The caterpillars are probably from the Yponomeuta species of moth of which there are several and trees normally recover well. The webs and caterpillars are harmless to humans. The webs help protect the vast numbers of caterpillars sheltering underneath from the predations by birds and other insects.
