Overview of felled forest site in the Bin Forest circa 1980

Date Added: 24 December 2025 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1980 Picture No: 6219

The image is courtesy of John Thomson, formerly Forest District Manager of Aberdeenshire and Moray Forest District. This black and white image was taken by a photographer from Westland of Inverurie, Photographic Artists, but there is no detail on the location or operations.

The image appears to have been taken over a clear fell area with a standing tree edge and a house just visible on the right. The forest road seen in the middle ground may be running to the west or south west and so far is not recognised but assumed to be in the general Huntly or north Aberdeenshire area about 1980.

Any suggestions on potential location would be very welcome.

This is taken from Pirries road in the Bin. Track to the left takes you down to where district office is now.The building to the right is Roddentree farm with Ba Hill and Gartly Moor on left and Clashmach and Kirkney in background on the right. Some of the larger sitka was exported to Germany. I was part of team felling this area. Comment left on 13 March 2026 at 20:47 by john allison
