The Forest Education Initiative – Highland Region circa 1990
The leaflet is one of a small number of older maps and information leaflets passed on by Brian Duff of Forestry and Land Scotland, North Region, Inverness.
Unfortunately the year of production of this leaflet is not known but any information on the year would be very welcome.
The Forest Education Initiative was very active in the early 1990s and the result of a partnership between the Forestry Commission, the Forest Industry Council of GB, the Timber Trade Federation and the Forestry Trust for Education and Conservation with the aim to reach out to the schools, teachers and pupils and enable them to visit forests, timber businesses and have access to forestry resources for the class room. Below are some of the quoted aims and opportunities.
The Highland Cluster group aims :
To support teachers and help young people gain a
better understanding of forestry and the forest industry
Support forest activities as they appear in the school curriculum, and these will be entirely driven by the needs and desires of the class teachers
How FEI works:
The Initiative involves teachers, schools, colleges and other educational organisations in forest education activities
The Highlands provide a rich resource of woodlands and several wood-using industrial sites which can help teachers develop activity-based programmes for their students, bringing what they learn in the classroom to life
Teachers have access to woodland owners and timber companies through a comprehensive database
Who FEI cluster group are:
The Group consists of representatives of the Forestry Commission, the local Education Business Partnerships, local timber Industry - sawmilling & manufacturing -teachers and Independent forestry consultants
What the group can offer:
Visits to forests, sawmills, board mills, nurseries and harvesting sites
* Support for individual pupil projects
* Support for teacher development work
* Support for class projects
* Talks & presentations to schools
Resources for schools:
Three publications have been produced to help teachers and young people make the connection between growing trees and how wood is used
* "ONLY MADE OF WOOD"
for Infants and lower juniors 5 - 7 yrs
* "THE WONDER OF WOOD"
is aimed at primary school pupils aged 8 - I I yrs (Key Stages 2)
• "INVESTIGATING TREES AND TIMBER"
for secondary school pupils aged 14 - 19 yrs

Also in the image of the group speaking to school children in a forestry car park the man second from left speaking into the microphone in High Insley of Forest Enterprise North Region based in Inverness. Perhaps some will recognise and name the others.
