Future foresters from Benmore Forester Training School in the swim

Date Added: 12 December 2024 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1953 Picture No: 6018

The photograph is courtesy of Jim Millar, Banbury who attended Benmore from 1952 – 1954.

The students had been swimming in the River Masson that ran close past the grounds of the school. At least there was safety in numbers this time as some years previously a student was drowned while swimming in the Masson.

Jim has named the students from the back left:
Kevin McDonald
Peter Sloan
Jim Millar
Front from left:
Alec McDonald
Jimmy Lyon
Ian Mitchell

Any details of the forestry career of these students would be very welcome.

My father is Jimmy Lyon who is shown front centre of this photo. After forestry School my father was based at Port of Menteith Trossachs. Thereafter moved to Barcaldine forestry commission where he met my mum Margaret MacPhail who happened to be the daughter of my granny who was my father's landlady. After being posted at Barcaldine he was then posted to Kinlochard in the Trossachs where he was head forester for 11 years. My father retired early and returned to Barcaldine where he lived his last few years. He passed away peacefully 7th of October 2008. Leaving behind 4 daughters a son (me) and 6 grandchildren. Incidentally my son Jimmy's grandson Aaron Lyon found this clip of his grandfather.
Thanks to Norman Davidson for posting these pictures great to see them. I have forwarded them to other members of my family.
