The digitisation of the Slasher was undertaken by, and images courtesy of, the Forest Research Knowledge and Information Management staff based at both the Northern Research Station in Roslin, Scotland and Alice Holt in Surrey, where the original copies are currently located.

Balfour-Browne Deer Trophy
Mr Gerald Springthorpe has been awarded the Balfour-Browne Deer Trophy for 1968.
The trophy was presented to the Commission by Miss Balfour-Browne in memory of her brother, the famous deer artist and sculptor, for annual award to a person who has done exceptional work in the production of proper conservation and control of deer.
The selection of the recipient was made by Mr Peter Garthwaite - Head of Forest Management Division - and the Chairman of the British Deer Society and of the Scottish Council of the British Deer Society.

Prize
Mr D. Holmes, Civil Engineering Assistant in the North East England Conservancy Office has been awarded a set of drawing instruments and two text books for submitting the best paper in Theory of Structures in the O.N.C. terminal examinations in the Kingston Upon Hull College of Technology.

Retirements
Mr A.C. Connell, Conservator, SW (E) has retired after 37 years service with the Commission.
Mr H. Adams, Head Forester E (E) has retired.
Mr B.H. King, Head Forester SE (E) has retired.
Mr R.B. Woodrow, Head Forester E (E) has retired. He served on the same Beat in Thetford Forest for over 32 years.
Mr Arthur Cadman, Deputy Surveyor, New Forest has retired.
Miss E.D.B. Niven has retired after 41 year service with the Commission.

Transport Allowance
Mr G.D. Rouse, Conservator, South West England, tells the tale of the reduction of a bicycle allowance and subsequent demand for repayment.

Obituaries
The Earl of Radnor, former Forestry Commissioner and Forestry Commission Chairman has died.
Mr David Rhys Grenfell, former Forestry Commissioner has died.
Sir George Langley-Taylor who served on the New Forest Committee and the Dean Committee has died.
Mr A.W. Cooke, Forester had died at the age of 61.

Multiple Land Use
The car park just off Allerston Forest Drive has been repurposed as a tennis court for the villagers of Low Dalby, after a new larger car park was required to accommodate vehicles used by supervisors in the adjacent offices.

Television and Radio
On Christmas Day, Radio 4's programme "The Countryside in December" will carry five minutes on Christmas Tree production in the Grizedale Forest and the Cottage Industry of Satterthwaite villages.
Scottish television are making a colour film on the "Queen Elizabeth 2". Included are shots of felling large trees at Garadhban Forest. The programme is to go out in black and white on 14th January, but the colour film will be sold to America and Canada and will be shown to passengers on the liner.
A BBC television film showing extraction equipment and techniques at Halwill and Dartmoor will be shown on the children's programme "Tom Tom" on 17th December.

Filming of Treasure Island
The BBC has chosen the Erme Estuary and surrounding private and Forestry Commission woodlands, on the South Devon coast between Salcombe and Plymouth, for their new serial film of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.
Head Forester Warwick Deal, Plym Forest, SW (E), and his team ask colleagues not to judge their prowess as foresters from the specimens they will see!
