Slasher Magazine Summary: Publication No. 226 - October 1966
The digitisation of the Slasher was undertaken by, and images courtesy of, the Forest Research Knowledge and Information Management staff based at both the Northern Research Station in Roslin, Scotland and Alice Holt in Surrey, where the original copies are currently located.

The Queen's House Reopened
A brief history of the Queen's House at Lyndhurst in the New Forest, which has been fully restored and reopened this month as the local administration centre of the Commission.
The opening ceremony was performed by Lord Ashburton, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, who was introduced by Commission Chairman, Mr Leslie Jenkins.
Among those at the ceremony were Mr M. Compton, Commissioner for Administration and Finance; Mr Gwynfryn Davies and Mr F. Sellers, Commissioners; Lord Radnor, former Commission Chairman and Lady Radnor; Lord Malmesbury, Official Verderer; Mr G.B. Ryle, former Deputy Director General of the Commission and now a Verderer; Mr E. Wynne Jones, with a long term of office as Deputy Surveyor.
Mr W.A. Cadman, the present Deputy Surveyor served as tour leader during an inspection of the building.
Obituaries
Mr Leslie Thomas Edwards (known as L.T.), Chief Forester, South Wales Conservancy has died aged 59.
Mr A.H. Spencer (Bert Spencer), Head Forester on Work Studies duties has died aged 46.
Promotions
Mr J. Liddell, New Forest, promoted to Chief Forester.
Mr J.E.W. Lloyd, South Wales, promoted to Chief Forester.
Mr R.J. Jenkins, the Dean, promoted to Chief Forester.
Sweden Visit
Mr E.G. Richards, Mr G.D. Rouse and Mr L. Troup visited Sweden for the Sixth Session of the FAO/ECE/ILO Committee which deals with questions of forest working techniques and training of forest workers.
Over 100 delegates and observers travelled by bus and train over the part of Sweden bounded by Sundsvall, Ostersund, Falum and Galve.
The Sund processing machine, which removes branches, cross-cuts and sorts saw-logs from pulpwood was demonstrated.
At the end of the visit, Mr Richards was presented with a set of 21 tumblers to mark his retirement after nine years as Chairman. Each tumbler is engraved with the name of the country which donated it.
Mr Rouse, Chief Harvesting Officer was elected to produce a report on each day's proceedings.

South Wales Fires
Head Forester D.M. Morgan, Cymmer, South Wales doesn’t share Mr Connell's optimism regarding forest fires. He says there are still so many forest fires in the Coed Morgannwg area, even when the FDR is zero. The fire risk is increased due to the abundance of Molinia.
Retirements
Mr Fred Williams, Forester, Deudraeth, North Wales has retired after originally starting in 1919 with the Office of Woods in the Forest of Dean.
Mr D.H. Farrance, former Forester at Goytre has retired after 36 years service. He joined the Commission in 1930 and served at Hay and Brechfa before moving to Goytre where he has been in charge for the past 8 years.

Windspread Measured
Mr P. Wood, Forester, Elsham, East England refers to the article in the April issue of The Slasher "More Work for the Computer" and says towers were erected in various forests in Germany in 1894. In 1898 Danklemann published results of anemometer and other readings at various heights by forest stands and compared them with readings in open country.
Mr Wood recommends the book "The Climate near the Ground" by Rudolph Geiger published by Harvard University Press, 1965.
District Dinner
Last month, staff of No. 2 District, East England Conservancy, gathered at the Black Horse Inn, Grimsthorpe.
Mr A.L. Mitchell, Head Forester, Mr H.G. Muggleton, Head Forester and Mr J.D. Snowden, Forester are moving eastwards to Norfolk. Mr S.J. Law, Head Forester, is changing forests within the district.
Educational Visit
Members of the York Office staff set off on their annual educational visit.
The visit was to York Forest and the District Officer, Mr Ian Marshall, gave an introductory talk on chemical weeding in the forest.
Lunch was taken in the grounds of the Castle Howard Estate and the party was shown around the estate woods.
A conducted tour of Castle Howard House, one of Yorkshire's stately homes, concluded the visit.
Cricket
The cricket match between a Conservancy team and a timber merchants' eleven was played at York for the Place Cup. The opening attack of Mr B. Stockdale (4 for 33) and Mr G. Chambers (6 for 18) helped the Conservancy team win the trophy back after a year's absence.
