Two Papers by JAB MacDonald – 1961 and 1963 on Thinning
The two papers by JAB MacDonald, former Conservator of South Scotland, have kindly been accessed by Prof Edward(Ted) Wilson (www.silviculture.org.uk) and originally published in the following:
1. MacDonald, J.A.B. 1961 The simple rules of the "Scottish Eclectic" thinning method. Oxford University Forest Society Journal, 5 (9), 6-11.
2. MacDonald, J.A.B. 1963 Thinning to Meet Today's Problems. Forestry: An International Journal of Forest Research, 36 (2), 165-17
These papers described a crown thinning system that was used extensively in South Scotland and in other parts of the UK for a time. The most recognisable aspect was the painted spots on the main final crop trees. In the papers JAB argues strongly in support of the merits of crown thinning and in particular selecting and paint marking, at an early stage, the final crop trees. This was named the ‘Scottish Eclectic Thinning Method’.
