Slasher Magazine Summary: Publication No. 205 - January 1965
The digitisation of the Slasher was undertaken by, and images courtesy of, the Forest Research Knowledge and Information Management staff based at both the Northern Research Station in Roslin, Scotland and Alice Holt in Surrey, where the original copies are currently located.

New Year Honours
Sir Richard Cotterell, former Commissioner until his retirement in 1964 has been appointed a C.B.E.
Mr Charles MacDonald, Head Forester, Skye Forest has been appointed an M.B.E.
Professor E.O. Mobbs OBE, Chair of Forestry at Bangor has been appointed a C.B.E.
Mr G.W. Shaw, Deputy Director of Operations, Bowater Paper Corporation has been appointed an O.B.E.
Mr S.T. Campbell, Secretary of the Home Timber Merchants' Association of Scotland has been appointed an O.B.E.
Retirements
Mr John Melville (Jock Melville), Forester at Selm Muir, Midlothian, South Scotland Conservancy has retired. He commenced work with the Commission at Dalbeattie Forest in 1926.
Mr William Macleod, Foreman at Lael Forest, North Scotland Conservancy has retired after serving at the same forest since 1932.
Mr Roddy MacKenzie, Ganger, Skye has retired after serving 10 years with the Commission.
Success of Mr R.G. Brown
Mr R.G. Brown (Bob Brown) who left the Commission some time ago for the role of Senior Executive Officer in the Pay Research Unit, has now moved to the new Ministry of Land and Natural Resources.
Elementary Conservation
Head Forester R.J. Jennings reports on the Cannop ponds in the Forest of Dean, which were once almost empty of fish due to the discharge from a local factory, and deserted by wildfowl due to local sharpshooters. When a solitary swan was shot, gun permits, originally issued to keep the squirrel population down, were withdrawn. Some Canada Geese and young mallard were put on the water and the local Angling Society stocked the waters with coarse fish. All are now thriving.
For the Naturalist
The Birmingham Natural History Society has discovered a sand-dune plant community by the London - Birmingham railway line in Warwickshire. In 1958, sea sand was dumped on an embankment that was on fire, which has now formed an area ten by thirty yards of semi stable dunes.
The Ministry of Agriculture is warning people to be on their guard against mink. Since their escape from mink farms or ranches, they are living and breeding in many areas, notably in the rivers Teign and Avon in Devon, the Stour in Dorset and the Teifi in West Wales, in addition to several areas in Scotland. They are likely to raid poultry houses, pheasantries, fish ponds and rivers for their food.
Inforesta Drama Group Accolade
There was an enjoyable performance of "Arsenic and Old Lace" presented by the Inforesta Drama Group last month.
The characters were played by Lilly Pallett, Edna Tebbitt, Ken Winter (who was also the Stage Manager), Dorothy Lloyd, Brian Holland, Maurice Gubby, John Ward, John Alp, Chris King, Alan Meyer, Geoff Seal and Alan Chapman (who also produced the play).
The Group's next presentation will be Philip King's comedy "On Monday Next" on 6th and 7th May in London.
For Sailors
Mr R.C.B. Vines, Assistant Forester at Challock, SE (E), is hoping to raise a team from Commission staff to compete in the Civil Service Inter-Departmental Team Sailing Championships.
Mr Vines, recently won the Menagerie Championship at Fisher's Green. He also won the Civil Service Sailing Association Individual Championship, sailing his Enterprise Class dinghy on the same waters.

Congratulations on Exam Success
Congratulations to Mr C.H. Blackwood, Dunnerdale Forest, NW (E), who took the second and final part (practical) of the Royal Forestry Society's annual exam for the Forester's Certificate, at Huntley Estate, Gloucestershire. He gained top marks and was awarded the C.P. Ackers prize.
Richard Baker, 17 year old son of Mr David Baker, who was at Alice Holt for 12 years before moving to the Education Branch at HQ, has won an exhibition to Churchill College, Cambridge.
Congratulations on Birth
Congratulations to Mr D. Hughes, District Officer, North Wales, and Mrs Hughes on the birth of their daughter.
Unusual Fire
A fire at Allerston, N.E. England, burned undetected, underground in bracken and needle peat for five weeks, severely damaging the roots of Scots pine, making it necessary to fell them. The fire was found to be on a shelf more than 100 yards from a road and concealed from observation by configuration of the ground and a dense crop of rough Douglas. The cause was almost certainly a camp fire.
