Slasher Magazine Summary: Publication No. 187 - July 1963
The digitisation of the Slasher was undertaken by, and images courtesy of, the Forest Research Knowledge and Information Management staff based at both the Northern Research Station in Roslin, Scotland and Alice Holt in Surrey, where the original copies are currently located.

Farewell
Lord Radnor, Chairman since 1952 thanked the FC staff and welcomed his successor Lord Waldegrave.
New Commissioners
Mr Fred Sellers (timber merchant) of Wellington, Salop. has been appointed Commissioner in succession to Mr E. Bryan Latham who has represented the home timber trade on the Commission since 1957.
Col. J.F. Williams-Wynne of Towyn, Merioneth, landowner, woodland owner, member of the North Wales Regional Advisory Committee, appointed Commissioner in succession to Mr Arthur Lloyd Owen Owen.
Mr Gerald Palmer of Newbury, Berks, woodland owner and Chairman of the Regional Advisory Committee for South East England has been appointed to occupy the vacancy as Commissioner created by Lord Waldegrave's appointment as Chairman.
Commissioners Re-Appointed
Sir Richard Cotterell has been re-appointed as a Commissioner.
Major D.C. Bowser has been re-appointed as a Commissioner.
Mr E. Gwynfryn Davies has been re-appointed as a Commissioner.
A Timely Introduction to FC Staff
Mr Raban Williams (Assistant Land Agent, North West England Conservancy) had cause to remember George Pringle, a Forestry Commission staff member, due to the rescue of his five year old son and himself from the Llugwy River, Betws-y-Coed. Forest worker's wife Mrs W. Davies cared for the son.
MPs Visit Scottish Forests
Twelve MPs visited Scottish forests in the North Conservancy. Major D.C. Bowser, Mr J.A. Dickson and Mr H.A. Maxwell led the party to forests in the supply area of a £20 million pulp mill which is to be erected at Fort William.
Birds
A pair of ospreys, the male possibly coming from Sweden, have nested in Inshriach Forest in the North Conservancy. Another pair have nested in Loch Garten for many years but they lost their eggs in a gale in May.
A dead starling was found in Halwill Forest, South West England. Head Forester G.F. Beasley sent its ring to the British Museum who discovered it had been ringed in 1961 in the Novgorod Region, U.S.S.R.
To The Summit
Mr T. Queen, Assistant Forester at Rowardennan finished second with a time of 1 hour, 22 minutes and 12 seconds in the annual race to the summit of Ben Lomond, 3,192 feet above sea level. The winner was two minutes faster.
Fancy a Wood Chopping Holiday?
Forester Mr J. Hobbs, Cymmer, South Wales, mentions an article in the Radio Times by Johnnie Morris. The drink/driving laws in Sweden are strict and the normal sentence for felons is three months wood chopping in a camp.
Holly Berries in Mid-Summer
Whilst walking behind the Speech House, Mr R.J. Jennings (Head Forester, Dean) noticed a holly tree bearing bright crimson berries from the previous year.
Golf in Scotland
Twenty six members and friends joined the Spring outing of the FC (Scotland) Golf Club to Pitfirrane, Dunfermline. A cold windy day accounted for the high scores.

Never Mind the Head Forester
Head Forester Mr R.J. Jennings recalls an incident in one of the Dean towers when he received little sympathy from a GPO engineer who dropped an instrument on his head. Assistant Forester Mr Alistair Fraser expressed concern to the engineer who was more worried the equipment might be damaged.

Still a Special at 75
Mr William Harrison (Warrener, Inglewood Forest, North of Carlisle) aged 75 is still a "Special" in the Cumberland & Westmorland Constabulary. He was "sworn in" in 1939 and given a shilling a week allowance to cover shoe leather.
