Glenroy Forest – Leanachan – Lochaber – Forest Map around 1989
The map was recovered from shed at Newton Nursery which acted as a storage area for Forest Research who used the maps to locate forest and tree experiments in the field.
The area above Roybridge and up Glenroy was acquired in 1956 and totalled over 4600ha but the boundaries from that time are not shown here. However it seems that much of the area was subsequently claimed as crofter grazing and after some considerable time - agreement was reached to plant up a series of small areas which in effect acted as shelterbelts for the stock. In 1966 a portion of over 1400ha was exchanged for another area of land elsewhere and termed the Keppoch exchange. Planting started in the 1960s and continued on in spasms through to the mid 1970s.
A further large disposal of land of over 2800ha was undertaken in 1984 and other sales of forest areas in 1988 as shown on the map.
