Garvan and Duisky Forest – Leanachan - Lochaber - Forest Map dated around 1986
The map was recovered from shed at Newton Nursery which acted as a storage area for Forest Research who used the maps to locate forest and tree experiments in the field.
This area may have been purchased by the Forestry Commission along with other areas along the south side of Loch Eil from Conaglen Estate. The Duisky Forest was planted in 1963 mainly with Sitka spruce and some larch used as a firebelt around part of the area. The two westerly areas named Garvan were planted in 1964 and 1966 to 1967. Again Sitka spruce was heavily used. It is interesting to note that in the south Garvan block an area in Comp 5106 has been labelled as Nat SP /scrub which may indicate a small remnant of Native Scots pine and birch.
Jock Elder was the Foreman in charge at the time of the Leanachan team that planted the area. Names not recalled except for Alex Boa and Sammy Cameron (Ganger - lived in croft along past the Commando Memorial).
All three of these forest areas appear to be been sold to private owners or companies in 1995 and 1996.
