Forest Research species experiment site Leanachan Forest – 1933
This map was part of a collection passed to Forestry Memories from a storage shed in Newton Nursery used by Forest Research. The location on the Torlundy Road is not known but assumed to be well on the way towards Lianachan Holdings or perhaps near the present chair lift and parking sites.
This is an extensive series of small plots of planted Sitka and Norway spruce species and international provenance trials laid down from 1934-1939. The various seed identity numbers used can be located in the Forestry Commission seed register but some are annotated with larger sequence numbers in the five hundreds which may refer to special home collections by Forest Research. Interestingly there is one trial plot of Picea rubra or P. rubens (origin eastern America) and another Sitka plot annotated as Special Unknown!
Again it is unknown whether this area survived the large fire that burnt a very large area of Leanachan Forest in the late 1940s.
Note that the map has been drawn on blue linen paper fabric - commomly used for long term recordong maps.
