Whiteash Hill Forest information and trail sign - Moray Forest District, Fochabers Area
This Information sign along with quite number of others was mounted informally on the inside wall of a management shed in Newton Nursery. These obsolete signs had been removed from the various forest locations and perhaps used to brighten up an otherwise dull wooden wall. The colours have faded somewhat and the shed roof lights have added another colour variation.
It is difficult to date the sign but it features the Forestry Commission name and two tree symbols indicating that this was before the demarcation of Forest Enterprise management of the national forest areas from about 1992. Any information would be very welcome. The vast majority of Forestry Commission and Forest Enterprise signs were drawn up by Forest Design and Interpretation Services based in Silvan House, Corstorphine Road, Edinburgh. The team was headed by Bob Jones and was also responsible for corporate image designs on paper, cards etc and produced the iconic well recognised ‘two tree symbol’. Team members around the year 2000 included Alan Chalmers, Dorothy Benoy, Barry Hearse and Sarah ?
This sign, previous location at the Duchess Of Richmond monument in the forest, denotes the various walking trails and also some descriptions of local notable wildlife. Sadly the capercaillie are very unlikely to be around in this area today.
The panoramic view depiction shows the extent of the land sea area visibility in favourable weather conditions. Perhaps the Brora label has slipped a little too far to the left in this case?
