Forest Walk and Interpretative sign for Slorach’s Wood – Fochabers
This Information sign along with quite number of others was mounted informally on the inside wall of a management shed in Newton Nursery. These obsolete signs had been removed from the various forest locations and perhaps used to brighten up an otherwise dull wooden wall. The colours have faded somewhat and the shed roof lights have added another colour variation.
It is difficult to date the sign but it features the Forest Enterprise name and two tree symbols indicating that the timing followed the push to publicise more strongly from about 1882 the role of Forest Enterprise as managers of the national forest areas. Any information would be very welcome. The vast majority of Forestry Commission and Forest Enterprise signs were drawn up by Forest Design and Interpretation Services based in Silvan House, Corstorphine Road, Edinburgh.
The walks originate south of the village of Fochabers and this sign predates the new bypass road was constructed. There is mention of Jean Carr’s stone and more on that in Picture No 5650.
