Preparation of Ropes and Strops for Climbing and Cablecrane use
These are some of the notes prepared by FC Education & Training Branch, for their training courses on tree climbing and cablecrane operation (ET65/3/7-3).
I was given these notes when I attended a tree climbing course at Tay FD (Dunkeld) in 1986, prior to the commencement of the tree foliar sampling season at Perth Silv(N) Research Outstation.
This was due to the large programme of mature tree fertiliser experiments that were still active at the time in the Perth outstation area. This included Charlie Taylor's Scots pine (SP), sewage sludge application experiment at Montreathmont Forest, Angus. Climbing five, pole stage SP trees in each treatment plot, with no lower branches, sparse upper crown of small diameter branches, whilst holding, and positioning 6m of alloy extension poles and then operating the shoot cutter head to obtain the shoots from the whirls at the base of the current year’s terminal shoots will stay with me forever. As will the stench of the digested liquid sewage that plastered the treated plots and the trees.
Having been sprayed into the plots by a high pressure monitor, at some liberal rates and on a site with a 7z(x)/(7z(x)) soils, the sewage had puddled below the brash layer, created from previous thinning treatments of the plots. All the equipment and ourselves were covered in the filth.
