Portclair Forest compartments and early forest planting up to 1932
One of a series of maps and drawings found in old ex military map cases stored in the loft of the Fort August Forest office and recovered by Grant Macintosh.
Port Clair Forest was one of the first forest areas worked by the Forestry Commission following its inception in November 1919. The planting years are annotated by the figures such as P27 indicating the areas indicated were planted in the period Oct 1926 - Sep1927 (The planting year and financial year at this time).
This map has the compartments and planting boundaries drawn onto an Ordnance Survey map. The various compartments are all numbered in a rough sequence but this broken by the division of the area into Series No 1-5, with each having its own compartment sequence. The areas of each compartment are recorded but sadly not the tree species planted.
The Forest Worker Holding No 3 is annotated as are the three small forest nursery areas in the Series 5 location.
There are some later additional hand written notes roughly inscribed but difficult to read and may refer to areas of ‘ringed oak’ and also soils ’15 inches of sandy soil over ?’.
