Personal letter to Sandy Rose from John McEwen
The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence, Bankfoot, who is the grandson of Sandy Rose.
The letter date 16 Jan 1969 from his home address in Blairgowrie must have been written when John Mc Ewen was about 82. John of Who Owns Scotland book fame was in charge of Monaughty forest from circa 1921 – 1925 and would have employed Sandy (or Alex) Rose on his first job with the Forestry Commission.
In the letter John congratulates Sandy on his MBE award and describes the lining out machine that Sandy devised as a ‘miracle affair’. He also indicates that he has heard rumours about Ledmore Nursery being given up by the Commission and asks if there is anything fundamentally wrong with the site. John says that he has had a note from G Gilbert (Head Forester at Durris Forest) indicating that he is retiring in 1970 and that age 60 is too young to retire. Not sure of the connection between the two men and G Gilbert?
Any comments and further information very welcome.
