Timber loading crane truck - circa 1980
The image is courtesy of Tam Anderson, Perth, who worked in forestry for many years. This machine he believes may have been owned by Bob Wardlaw of Perth, a timber contractor who was working on Stobhall Estate removing dead elm trees. The vehicle registration is MSU 208 (Glasgow?). At the time Tam was working as a forester on the estate.
There is some uncertainty as to the original use of these machines but Alasdair Cameron, Black Isle, suggests that they are former wartime Ford or Chevrolet vehicles built in Canada brought over to UK, some possibly used initially as breakdown trucks. It must be assumed that there was a PTO provision on these vehicles for driving winches.
Any details on their origins, makers and who did the conversions with the extended jib and cable winches would be very welcome.
