Rolling the green crop in Ledmore Nursery

Rolling the green crop in Ledmore Nursery

Date Added: 21 June 2022 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1952 Picture No: 5398

The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence of Bankfoot whose grandfather, Sandy Rose, was Forester and Head Forester at Ledmore Forest Nursery from 1950 (when land was acquired) until his retirement in 1969.

This image has been given an estimated date of 1952 but could actually be earlier in the period when the nursery was first established and extensively green cropped to improve soil structure and fertility prior to any trees being raised.

A lovely image of a tracked tractor pulling a farm roller through a green crop on a wet day. The tractor has Forestry Commission and a number S0293 stencilled on the engine side cover. The S signifies that this was allocated to Scotland and one of the earliest numbers recorded on this website. Can anyone say when the vehicle and machine numbering system began?

Can anyone identify the tractor make and model? Caterpillar?

Appears to be a Bristol 22, but I am not 100%. It would appear to be too small for a Caterpiller D2 and knowing that the FC already were using Bristol crawler tractors at the time in nurseries and skidding trials leads me to think Bristol. Comment left on 21 June 2022 at 11:14 by Bill Rayner
