Chopper treatment of green crop in Ledmore Nursery
The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence of Bankfoot whose grandfather, Sandy Rose, was Forester and Head Forester at Ledmore Forest Nursery from 1950 (when land was acquired) until his retirement in 1969.
This image follows on from those of the rolling treatment of the nursery green crop treatment. Ploughing in of a flattened green crop would always be very difficult to ensure complete soil coverage. The employment of a Taarup forage harvester to chop up the green crop stems and scatter the residue over the ground would certainly make for easier ploughing in. The Ferguson 35 (Red Fergie) has a Registration of 114 CLW (London area) and is probably a Forestry Commission machine. Can the driver and observer be named (see PDF below).
See the PDF for more views of the outfit – note the cover over the rotary drum cutter of the forage harvester has been fixed open to allow the chopped material to fly out and spread more evenly over the cut swath. Bagging has been added to the sides to keep the flying material within the swath width.
