Duncan is operating a Challenger 33 tractor (circa 1970) pulling a twin furrow plough designed to complete ploughing similar to a farmers field. The aim was to completely suppress the vegetation such as heather which competed very strongly for the limited amount of nutrients in these low fertility sites and did not allow the planted trees to grow well at all. Unfortunately, even with all this suppression the tree growth, although quite fast initially, fell away very quickly after a few years and in time the expensive ploughing practice was abandoned.

Duncan is shown working on a wintery site at Kenelvie, between Duffton and Archiestown, for Chief Forester Bert Thomson.
