Benmore Forester Training School Magazine – The ‘Rutter’

Date Added: 29 April 2021 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1958 Picture No: 5107

The two magazines dated as Spring 1957 and Christmas 1958 were found by Eric Morley, Knaresborough, in a job lot of older newspapers and other printed items that he had purchased. When he searched on the internet for the name ‘Benmore Forester Training School’ printed on the magazines, Eric was eventually able, through Forestry Memories, to forward the items for scanning and inclusion on this website. We are indebted to Eric for forwarding these rare copies of the Rutter.
The Spring 1957 edition is shown in the previous Photo Record Number 5106 and the Christmas 1958 edition in the PDF below.

The contents consist of verses on various subjects, short articles and some tongue in cheek student exploit updates. It is notable that this edition was printed ‘in house’ as the normal professional printer S Shields of Sandbank, Dunoon was not available. The typing appears to have been carried out by Forestry Commission clerical staff in either the District Office or Forest Office and two ladies surnames are credited namely those of Cathro and MacGregor.

Many of the contributors have published under pseudonyms or the articles are unattributed but the following names are mentioned:
Jim Adrain (Cover Image)(Note spelling in Magazine as Adrian)
A K Smith (Editor)
AR Powell
R Harvey

Any information on the contributors or other students of this time would be very welcome.
