Cutting Peat on a blanket bog forestry area
The image is from a collection of slides and photographs ‘rescued from the skip’ and handed to Forestry Memories. Generally very little information with or about them and for details we will have to rely on readers’ memories or geographical knowledge.
No information on location or name. Gentleman is using a silage knife to slice up the tough top surface of the peat and special spades and peat barrow are seen below him. The second image in the PDF below shows the uncovered peat area being sliced somewhat horizontally and the slices being laid on the peat barrow. Not the traditional way but a process adapted and works well for single person working.
The flat horizon with the young Lodgepole pine behind is very similar to the Dalchork Forest area near Lairg and in particular the forest road leading to Dalnessie Lodge. There were a number of peat banks laid out in this area and more certainly in later years of the 1980s.
