Burnt Forest ploughing near Rothbury, Northumberland

Andrew Allan (Callandar) had taken on a contract with the Forestry Commission to plough up a burnt plantation of Sitka spruce to enable it to be replanted.

This view down the ploughed furrow gives an excellent view of the soil conditions and the potential to plant trees in the top of the soil slopes. However the only access for the planters would have to be along the bottom of the furrows and even then not all the dead trees would be clear and they would have to force their way through. Tough going!
