Forestry Commission Technical Notes - Afforestation 1952
This is one of the early publications in the Technical Notes series but unfortunately not the first edition. No information is given on the first publication date.
The publication covers or skims through a whole series of topic a flavour of which can be gained from the contents page. It begins with Reference Lists before going into actual operational technicalities. Very unfortunately there is no mention of author or authors but the last paragraph of the introduction interestingly sets the tone of the time.
“It is not possible to cover in a booklet all the combinations of environment which have to be taken into account in deciding finally on a course of action, but there is always superior direction on matters of doubt. The man who contemplates cutting across recommended procedure has reached the stage when he must proceed with caution”

The guidance detail is in many cases a bit outdated but very ably sets the scene and the knowledge base as at 1952. On the other had some of the points are strikingly still relevant today and for example applies to the choices of tree species and what is classed as its favourable conditions and also the warning points.
