The Chain Saw a Power Saw Association publication
‘The Chain Saw’ was published in 1970 by the Power Saw Association that appears to have been an association of chainsaw manufacturers, importers and dealers, in England and Wales, at the time. It is a small A5 size pamphlet publication, with articles on: Chain-saw prices; Vibration; Chain saw felling techniques for Conifers; Timber..!! ; Letters; Chain saw Servicing; News Items; Classified Advertisements and a Members List.
The ‘Chain saw felling techniques for Conifers’ article, written by A. R. Dunning (Technical Training Service, Forestry Commission), reminds me of my initial chainsaw course with Piers Simon, FC Training Branch, at Culloden in the old chainsaw workshop/shed, in late 1974. Then being sent to the Blackstand in the Black Isle for my “consolidation” period, felling 2nd thinning SP and being paid £0-06 apiece for each 3m length stacked at the side of the rack ready for forwarder extraction.
The ‘Chain saw Servicing- Magneto’ article also demonstrates the progress in chain saw technology to the lean burn, fuel injection, and micro-processor controlled saws of today.
