Digging snow from fences - Glenlivet Forest

Glenlivet Forest staff digging out fences around the high elevation forests in the long hard winter of Feb – Mar 1963. Very often a vain attempt to hold back rabbits, hares and deer but usually the wind filled in the trenches that night. As can be seen the men are at least 8-10 feet down into the snow. The winter was that severe that there was little else that could be done apart from brashing ie removing the lower branches from the older trees to allow easy access to walk through the woods.
Special thanks to Keith Gough (Ganger) who worked at Glenlivet from 1958 – 1983 as he was able to name the staff in the low quality photograph. The names are in the previous photograph (475)but this shot shows the depth of cutting more clearly.
