Tulliallan Nursery Workers
The photographs are courtesy of Will Anderson, Seafield and Strathspey Estates and also his father Willie Anderson/Kincardine Local History Group. Both men worked for a period with the Forestry Commission in Tulliallan Nursery and surrounding forests. This photograph and a number of others were given to Willie Anderson by Jean Stoddard (nee Gibb) whose father Jock Gibb is in some of the photographs. The photographs were placed in the Kincardine History Group archive by Willie Anderson. The year the photographs were taken is unknown but estimated roughly as between1947-1950 and 1948 has been allocated as the year.
A great historical image of lining out as at 1957 at Tulliallan nursery and demonstrating the systems and equipment then used. The tractor, a Ferguson Brown possibly, is back filling the trench and covering the roots of all the young trees in the lining out boards. Note the mud piling up on the metal spade lug wheels. Tractor registration is CHW425 and is that a licence holder disc on the side of the radiator? Note the roller blind on grill to control air flow to the radiator.
The line sitting back a row or two indicates that the soil is flattened by spade as seen here and once the tractor is clear the line set up for the new row and the new edge all cut by spade. The lining out boards are very homemade looking and certainly a heavy weight robust construction. The boards are being filled in behind the canvas or hessian shelter. Difficult to see how the tree clamping board is held in place but there are some signs of a bolting mechanism going through the middle back of the board.
Note two possible visiting senior staff or supervisors looking on.
Any more details very welcome.
