Tulliallan Nursery machines and equipment

Date Added: 18 May 2020 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1985 Picture No: 4718

The photographs are courtesy of Will Anderson, Seafield and Strathspey Estates. Will worked for a period with the Forestry Commission in Tulliallan Nursery and surrounding forests.

In front are two vibrating undercutting machines that draw a vibrating blade at depth below the bed of young trees. They fit onto the three point linkage of the tractors and are powered by the power take off shaft from the tractor. The machine usually serves two purposes the first being to slacken the roots of plants prior to lifting by hand for dispatch to forest. Secondly they also act as root pruners and create a shallower more fibrous roots system on the young plants part way through their period in the nursery beds.

Behind are the ubiquitous trailers used everywhere for shifting loads of plants, discarded weeds, fertiliser, grit etc around the nursery.
