Ford Tractor and Wartsila Crane assembly

Photograph is courtesy of Jim Christie, Crook of Devon, a former senior mechanical engineer in the Forestry Commission.

Possibly a Chappelhall workshop image of a machine for the general use in Forestry Commission forests for timber harvesting. This machine combination was certainly made by Chieftain Forge according to a comment by David Shearer and hitched to a forwarding trailer, a Trysil, also produced by Chieftain Forge.

Note the very small winch drum in red at the bottom of the back opening plate. The rope is lead through to vertical pipe to a pulley block just below the base of the crane. An unusual arrangement and wonder how often it was used? The year allocated is uncertain.

I remember the Wartsila crane, and Willie wolf of chieftain forge. Does any one recall the Belarus tractor, rough and ready but great in their day! Wartsila are developing marine engines to run on non fossil fuels, such as Ammonia. Used in Belgium in 1942 instead of Diesel which was very scarce. JCB have now got agri and construction machines, running on Hydrogen. So it’s some good news for COP 26 on the moves away from fossil fuels.
