Ex military map cases
A series of ex military map cases containing maps and drawings found in the loft of the Fort August Forest office and recovered by Grant Macintosh.
The maps ranged from the years 1918 up to 1986 and featured a very early national woodland survey (1918), hand drawn early plantings, dyeline printed stock maps, wind hazard maps, soils surveys and civil engineering drawings of forest roads and bridges from around 1964 – 1973. The first and the latter are indeed rare finds.
Some of the maps cases were in poor condition with tops and bottoms falling out. The khaki cloth seals on the top covers seem to provide a friction hold to prevent the top opening inadvertently and may also have provided a bit of waterproofing. Can anyone confirm?
The stencilled lettering figures are mainly N III below which is 6 IN (taken to mean 6 inch map) followed by XXIII. In small lettering below are sets of initials and a year such as HSM 1941, HS&S 1942, HS&SM 1942, HS/M 1943.
The PDF shows another view. Can anyone decipher the stencilling?
