Glentress Forest ‘Rescue’
The photographs are courtesy of Stuart Mitchell, Peebles area, who formerly worked at Glentress Forest.
A lovely bit of theatre on a sinking Volvo BM clambunk skidder acted out by some of the Glentress Forest harvesting team in around December 1981.
The character actors from the left are Gordon Ferguson (Skidder Operator?), Ross Moffat (Feller), David Veitch (mechanic?) and last but not least Jim Hewitson (Clambunk Captain) and last to leave the ‘sinking ship’.
This old six wheel Volvo BM with its OSA 350 crane is most likely a conversion from a forwarder which may have been brought in second hand from Scandinavia. The FC number is worn away but could end in something like 663 and the registration number ends as ????6V. Does anyone know the history of this machine?
See the attached PDF and also the follow on images which tell the story of this minor bogging near Shieldgreen and the recovery with the combined pull of two skidders.
