Borgie Forest — moorland vegetation

‘Scirpus knoll with some dwarf heather. These rubbery, tight dry knolls are among the most difficult of peat types to afforest.’

Scirpus cespitosa or Deer Grass sometimes currently grown in garden centres is an indicator of very low nutrient and acidic status peat. It was a real challenge to all foresters faced with planting such a moorland covered with this species and in the early days resulted in many failed plantings.
