History of Forest of Deer, Aberdeenshire 1926-51

The attached PDF (click on PDF below image) is a copy of the report commissioned in 1951 to detail the start and progress of the plan to establish forests in the exposed climate of Northeast of Scotland. A certain Col. Fotherington expressed his concern at the time of any trees growing saying ' the Buchan country grows the biggest men and the smallest trees in Scotland'.
Today's results totally disprove the small trees part anyway and the report gives an insight into the trials and tribulations of the early foresters. Note towards the end of the report the list of foresters and senior staff.
