This plan is courtesy of Great North of Scotland Railway Association who drew up plan.
The airship base was dismantled after the end of the war and the site taken over by the Forestry Commission along with some neighbouring land. Remains of bases and walls can still be found amongst the trees. Beware of holes, pits and other obstacles. Note that Lenabo Forest was sold by the Forestry Commission in the 1990s

Stories and details of the base are attached to this image - click on PDF below the image.

The stories were found in a file in Huntly Forestry Commission Office but no details of actual authors located.

A nice and informative read. However there are two sides to the story...what we don't read about is the "forced labour" and maltreatment of conscientious objectors and the thousands of Irish labourers who endured the harshest of conditions in substandard living conditions. Perhaps the full story will one day be told. Comment left on 27 March 2021 at 17:04 by Fraser Mitchell
Having had an excellent guided tour round Lenabo on Sunday 26th March, 2023 courtesy of David Brown, Formartine Area Ranger, The Outdoor Access & Countryside Team, Aberdeenshire Council Ranger Service,Ellon. Tel.: 01467 538516 M: 077860217.
It seems incredible that the Forest of Lenabo as seen now was such a hive of industry when the Base was being constructed, then of great activity for national defence when it was up and running as an Airship Station. I would have really liked to have seen it before the trees were planted, at least it will be partly uncovered again when the trees have fully matured and are being harvested. I just hope I around then to see it exposed once more !
A truly fascinating place full of echoes of a different time and world, I am sure there are many people who now live in the Buchan area that have never heard of it and it's history, probably even those who regularly walk their dogs there too, a real shame as it it a superb place to wander round and imagine the happenings of those days. A very worthwhile way to spend a day.
