Photograph courtesy of William Fleming, Polmont who worked in Strathyre Forest as an apprentice Forest Craftsman and stayed in the Forestry Hostel.

Jean was the cook at the Forestry Hostel in Strathyre from around 1958 until its closure in 1960. Her husband Bobby worked with the forestry squad. They originally came from Glasgow and lived in a forestry house in Kipp Road, Strathyre.

Willie goes on to say:
‘The photo would have been taken in the early sixties before closure of the railway in 1965 due to a landslide in Glen Ogle some two months before the official date. A couple of points of interest - note the matchbox Austin Seven in the background, the station hand barrow and the small step in the platform wall giving a foothold before stepping of or on to the track!’

In the late ‘50s my parents hired Kipp, which was then a holiday cottage just by the railway. I’m sure that this was the lady who would hand over the cottage to us for our fortnights stay. The cottage itself had been the ‘keep’ I.e. the prison for Laggan Castle. The walls were incredibly thick and water came via a long hose pipe from a burn up the hill. I was only about 6 or 7 at the time. Comment left on 16 March 2019 at 15:47 by Robin Stokes
