Malcolm Wield, Dingwall, writes ‘ The figures left to right are Dr Amanda Walker; Chris Nixon aka Santa; Dr Peter Wilkes and Martin Rogers. The photo was taken above Invermoriston on Loch Ness-side on what was then still known as the Great Glen Cycle Route. The occasion in the photo was the result of a charity cycle ride and I’m sure this was the first of the Mountainous Mountain Bike Challenge events run from Glen Affric to Fort Augustus, which Chris and Martin had completed. At the time the GP’s from the local practise were leading the project to build the new day care centre in Drumnadrochit.

Martin had conceived the idea of linking cycle routes in individual Great Glen forests together in the first place to form a new type of FCS facility. The idea was soon taken up within FC and a partnership with Highland Regional Council (now The Highland Council) and British Waterways Scotland now Scottish Canals) was formed. Our road squad built several sections to link forests together on FC ground. The result was unveiled as the Great Glen Cycle Route connecting Fort William to Inverness. The collaboration continued to develop the idea and ultimately the GGCR was closed, being succeeded by the Great Glen Way.’
